Big Sister – Small Sister
Gender stereotypes and gender-based discrimination are omnipresent, and girls in Tanzania often deprived of basic rights they should otherwise be entitled to. This means that everyone’s have legal obligations to remove all discriminatory barriers, whether they exist in law or everyday life, and to undertake positive measures to bring about equality, including in access to, within, and through education.
Big Sister, Little Sister, is a mentorship program that seeks to provide girls with the skills and knowledge they need to counter stereotypes and obstacles and achieve their goals. We believe with help of mentors, girls become more confident and outspoken to address traditions, customs, norms, and negative perceptions that underprivileged from achieving their careers.
The program involves the Little Sisters (Girls in schools also out schools and the Big Sisters (Young women in universities or young women with careers). Big sisters and little sisters are paired based on mutual interests and similarities in personality and career goals. On monthly basis, little sisters are be paired with big sisters based on mutual interests and similarities in personality and groups they belong to which gives matches a chance to pursue activities that they both enjoy. Big sisters shares their stories to inspire and motivate little sisters to change attitudes and transform the community.
