Empowering Girls Through Education: The Her Education Program

Have you ever imagined your dreams being cut short because education became a cost you couldn’t afford? When access to school is threatened by poverty, early marriage, or gender-based violence, the question becomes not just what kind of future we hope for, but whether that future is even possible.

Girls First Initiative (GFI), with support from Mundo Cooperante, is changing that reality for adolescent girls in Kilwa District through the Her Education Program. This initiative empowers secondary school girls aged 12–18 to stay in school, build confidence, and pursue their dreams despite the barriers they face.

The project has already made a tangible impact:

  • 50 girls were recruited across four schools, with school contributions covered to ensure they can learn without interruption.
  • Parents have been trained in entrepreneurship and mobile savings tools, creating a sustainable support system at home and strengthening family resilience.
  • We have had strong community engagement with schools, leaders, and government officials, ensuring the project is implemented efficiently and makes lasting change.

Girls in the program receive life skills training, counseling, and reproductive health education, while their parents gain practical skills to increase household income. This dual approach addresses the root causes of school dropout and empowers families to invest in their daughters’ futures.

The Her Education Project shows that education and family empowerment go hand in hand. By supporting both girls and their parents, GFI is nurturing the next generation of leaders and change-makers.

It costs at least $250 to support one girl for a full year, covering school materials, food programs, and extra classes that help her perform at her best. By 2027, our vision is to see 500 young girls being actively supported on a yearly basis to pursue their education and dreams without the stress of financial barriers.

You can be part of this journey too. GFI welcomes partnerships, volunteer support, and donations to help resilient girls, those who show up and persevere even in the toughest circumstances, thrive in school. Together, we can create, nurture, and transform the future of these girls and strengthen our communities.

Keep an eye on our updates and join us in creating a future where every girl has the opportunity to succeed.
